St. Augustin School
Petite Riviere, Haiti
The Caribbean country of Haiti is by far the poorest
nation in our Hemisphere with average incomes less than $250 US a
year per person.
The St. Augustin school is a private
school located in the village of Petite Riviere in approximately
80-miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Working with the
American Haitian Foundation we have built this school's electrical
power system now using an 7200-watt (7.2KW) solar array with photovoltaic
panels, inverter and storage batteries and a 1500-watt wind
generator to produce all the school's power. The school became the first large solar powered school in Haiti in 2001. We have upgraded the
local village's water system to provide water to the entire school
and changed all the lighting in the school to compact fluorescent
bulbs, greatly reducing the power needs. Support is always needed
for the children's food and education needs and to further this
alternative energy project of powering the facility. Now 850+
students of all ages can see how renewable energy can change their
lives in Haiti while learning their academics. This very important
project is a joint and on-going effort of the American-Haitian
Foundation and Big Frog Mountain Corporation. We have other
completed solar systems in Haiti and are beginning more projects
in Haiti for secure, reliable and sustainable power systems for
schools, businesses and other non-profit organizations. Contact us at Big Frog Mountain
